The first 10 minutes: [eM] -eNCHANT arM- part 2

2006-01-14 14:24:17 by BlimBlim

As promised, here is the second part from the video I've done of [eM] -eNCHANT arM-, this time with my first impressions of the game.
A third video may appear in a few days, if the first boss fight is interesting.
Update: Low-res version of the video online.

1 linked game : Enchanted Arms

First of all graphically this is definitely not a killer game. It has some nice textures and effects, but it really looks like it's a quick upgrade of a Xbox game to Xbox 360. Nothing screams next gen so far except the nice 720p resolution with antialiasing. It certainly looks better than any jRPG so far (I'm not commenting on artistical stuff here), but that's it.

Gameplay wise this is very old school. Run around, do you objectives, destroy a few boxes to get some free stuff, and fight. Sometimes the camera is free, sometimes in smaller rooms it's fixed and changes only to help see some stuff.

The battle system is your typical grid based system. Move your character, then choose what to do, be it a support power or kick the enemies ass. Of course each move has a certain distance it can be used at, so you have to be placed accordingly on the grid. Well, you know the drill.

I can't comment on the story since I do not understand japanese, but so far from the tone of the dialogs (most are dubbed, but the less important stuff is only subbed) the scenario is still in the "easygoing" phase.

eM looks like a very typical jRPG, with some good but not incredible production values.

I never really get excited about a game after watching the first 10 minutes of it, for any game. =P Besides, it's an RPG, and most RPG's have a kind of slow pacing in the beginning.

It will never get that bad, but yes the moderation needs to be a bit harsher. I'd rather have fewer people in the forum, but have civil discussions.
Fuck ya! I never want to see you change this opinion Blim. Part of what makes this the best 'box site out there is the generally genial and civil conversations.

isn't the disc scratching issue universal to all 360s? you know, when the system is moved while reading the drive will scratch a deep ring around the disc cus of no padding. happended to us a couple times(replaced games, though). maybe MS is releasing drives with proper padding now or something..

anyway, thanks again for vids!!!

My 360 hasn't scratched a single disc simple don't change the position of the console while the damn thing is on and there will be no disc scratching.

Nothing will keep me from this game I'm very greatful for these videos and regardless of it not looking impressive as of yet I know this game is going to pick up the pace because from what I've seen this game will have a very strong story and to me its a must buy.

It probably just starts off small getting you into the game etc, but it has to be a very good game with all the major things that are suppose to go on in this game. I don't think anything will disappoint me about this game.

The golems you can use the game's going to have to get a lot tougher later on the many spells so much more can't wait for it to come to the usa. Like blim says this game is old school style doesn't try too much to innovate just delivers on the same successful rpg formula we've seen for years, but of course with a very interesting storyline from all the news i've heard about this game and the videos I've seen and amazing visuals.

Also for people worried about production value don't worry final fantasy (not referring to the mmorpg) and dragon quest will both be coming to the 360 thanks to the xna studio development tools microsoft will be providing to square enix and many other popular japanese developers. Square will make an announcement on it at E3 :)

What really hurts is the fact that if hideo kojima had got his hands on an xbox360 dev kit before other members of the konami team mgs4 would've been for the xbox360, but he didn't get one first and he never likes to play catch up so he chose mgs4 to be on the ps3 something that he'd get his hands on first.

From what I've seen of gameplay they are just letting you get a feel for the battle system early with those initial battles probably giving you helpful hints along the way, but we can't understand what is being said tho, but so far I like what I'm seeing. I don't think thats enough to be disappointed with the game yet as some people are saying.

How does that outside flower garden really look is it ugly or what? Hard to tell from vid.

I'm really liking what I'm seeing so far. We are basically just getting a small introduction to game right now by them letting us run around not a care in the world as of yet, which is what they said things initially started out until some strange woman shows up in the town one day and starts causing all sorts of trouble to my knowledge. Might be referring to the that blue woman.

It looks good for a RPG made in less than a year for a brand new hardware. Also strong points of the game seem to be script and characters, so if you're not understanding japanese (or you dislike JRPGs) there's no much point in playing it.

I mean hey my first time playing final fantasy VII I thought it sucked completely until I decided i'll give it a serious chance and just continue playing through and behold its to this date still one of the most amazing games I've played.

Hi! I'm another proud Japanese XBOX 360 owner and my console is doing great! My manufacturing date is Nov 21, 2005. If the Japanese XBOX 360 breaks, do we send it to Microsoft Japan or US?

i think the last 5 mins of the vid are quite good looking....great architecture and style and the graphics are quite nice in that section....i don't think i'd ever get into an rpg thats this old school though...the fighting system just looks a bit boring to me

Hehe I think the kinds of things you are able to do will make up for the style of play. For example just imagine what it's going to be like to use golems like otogi and all the others.

Also I've seen some pretty sick looking stuff in the last video on left column on www.em-game.net

Makes me think this game can't possibly upset me if there are more things like that in the game.

ok blim, i know if i dont have anything good to say dont say it at all but...

i cant let this one go. funny how some developers think next gen means increase the poly count and draw distance. the presentation seems rushed. those character cuts in the chat sequences are discusting. there should really be a bar in the technical department for 360 games. besides the high polycount and longer draw distance, i dont see why this isnt an xbox title. oh wait ms is lets anything hit the market to make it seem like theres a bigger library of "next gen games". PGR3 is next gen. as a 3d animator/modeler, kameos animation, lighting and textures are very impressive. 2k6 is a step in the right direction. the fight night demo is technically impressive. not to many technically advanced titles for the 360. COD is fun but it look like a really good PC game on my HDTV. when you get close to the textures in COD they pixelate, notice in kameo this doesnt happen. I know games arent all about graphics, but if its labeled next gen the graphics should be next gen, otherwise it should be on xbox, ps2 or gamecube.

I agree with you there this game doesn't seem as impressive graphically as it SHOULD've been, but then again I'll reserve my judgement until I play a usa version on my console, because no screenshot or video can do a game total justice in the graphics department until you've tried it yourself. I've seen different areas environments in enchant arm some areas with tall grass etc and alot of trees and it looked EXTREMELY impressive and there are other areas that are far more detailed beyond that of what we are seeing in the first 20 minutes of gameplay. So because I've seen some of these environments I have hope and the golems and the other methods in which you are able to fight also seem very enticing.

This game has alot that I'm interested in. It seems like it'll have a really good storyline once you get into it and even though they might've rushed this title and didn't polish enough (or so we think!!) I still have hope that this game will have enough depth in terms of gameplay mechanics and story to keep me from being disappointed.

This video alone is all the reason I need to consider this game a must get as far as I'm concerned.

Patiently waiting for this bad boy to get translated and sent to the usa man I simply have to get this game. :)

If this game does poorly in Japan i think it will force From Software to release it to Europe and the U.S. more so. (maybe they will just change the text and leave the audio) they have a bigger market in Europe and the U.S.

I was a bit disappointed to see the grid based battle system but as long as it has a compelling story i will be happy.

JRPG's are one of those things you either love or hate, it seems clear that the people who are putting this game down are obviously not JRPG fans.

Considering we are only just in the second month of the xbox 360 you can't expect a huge graphical leap, especially from a game thats was head for the original xbox.

It looks to me that From have done a great job within the time frame that they had and that it looks to be a lot of fun and thats the main thing, right ?

So true, i didn't think much of ff7 to begin with either.

Not to mention we have yet to see a post by someone who has played it and can understand Japanese.

There seem to be a lot of special moves you can pull off depending on how your characters are placed on the battle field, i feel a lot of the game play is lost due to the language barrier.

Yea and what I think about this new 3D models of the characters acting out the conversations isn't that bad as opposed to what were the convos like before in rpgs.

They would simply show a picture of the character and what they were saying or show a bubble over the head, but them acting this stuff out isn't so bad in my opinion it brings something new. So thats a nice addition.

I don't think the character models on screen when they talk are all that bad.

But when you look at the quailty of the in game cutscenes of Kingdom Hearts 2 (or any square-enix game on the PS2) it makes me a little sad.

But then if it were a Square-enix game it wouldn't be ready for another 3 years.
