Backwards compatibility: An interesting video

2006-01-18 08:35:26 by BlimBlim

RAZurrection sent me this very interesting video showing some non officially compatible Xbox games running on Xbox 360, with more or less bugs. His method was simple, simply trying the OXM demo discs who all launch directly. Looking at this, I'd say the compatibility list could be much larger very quickly.

11 linked games : Otogi 2 Dead or Alive Ultimate Def Jam : Fight for New York Destroy All Humans! Far Cry Instincts Juiced King Kong Mercenaries MotoGP 3: URT Star Wars : Republic Commando Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005

*Crosses fingers for Burnout 3*

Now that I'm looking at the BC list, it does seem rather small. :(

I'd place a bet on there being some big gamebreaking moments somewhere in each of the full versions of these games. If they are isolated incidents though we might see them added to the list soon enough.

One-third of the way through I was ready to slap the guy who made the video. :)
We get the idea that these are running on the 360, we dont need to see the blade every 10 seconds. Nice to know some of these games are semi-up and running.

Hahaha.

Well I heard this: indeed OXM demo's work but after putting in the same RETAIL game those didn't work..

Someone tested it on a Dutch forum. He took the same game that was on one of those demo discs, but the retail verion didn't work.

"I'd place a bet on there being some big gamebreaking moments somewhere in each of the full versions of these games. "

Possibly, but the engines 'seem' to run well within context of the demo, it's a good sign for the engine's compatibility in general. Even if there are crashes in the full versions that's a lot more preferable to configure a patch to eliminate the crashes than design one to get the engine running to an 'Xbox 1' level.

Interestingly Far Cry:Instincts froze the first time I played it (at the time on V1.1) but the second time through it played fine (minus the minor wireframe incursions) Remember these demo's aren't using specific profiles to emulate ...I was honestly amazed it worked at the level it did.

"One-third of the way through I was ready to slap the guy who made the video."

You quick, but I'm quicker.

"We get the idea that these are running on the 360, we dont need to see the blade every 10 seconds. "

You'd be surprised. People called fake on other forums, but I admit I did go over the top a bit. Sometimes the blade got stuck during load times and i'm not familiar with video editing so the video you see is the full version, i'll do better with the next one. I promise.

"Well I heard this: indeed OXM demo's work but after putting in the same RETAIL game those didn't work.."

Yeah. If you have the UK OXM demos 31-33 and 35-51 you should be able to test yourself.

From what i've gathered the patches you download over Live & Xbox.com are profile lists, with specific code designed to take advantage of the emulation code on the HDD. I'd guess some are allowed to boot (the list @xbox.com) and others are denied from booting (everything else with a retail xbox game signature) but OXM demos aren't really either so they boot.

"All I need is DOAX and DOAU and I'm fine."

DOA:U worked and the engine is pretty much the same in the demo as in the final game. I'd say it'll conveniently be compatible once DOA4 sales slow down, so too will XBV as they both use the same engine compatibility issues shouldn't be major.

Wow otogi is such a sick looking game this game and ninja gaiden 2 as both 360 exclusives would be perfect.

Cool...the only game that I really really want BC'd is Street Fighter 3. I'm pretty dissapointed that zero 2D games are BC...seems like they'd be the easiest to get up and running..but they're not that popular I guess and ya never know.

Metal slug3 and capco sf2 aniversery edition would be good too, perhaps the 360 digital pad will be better than the xbox's one Hadoken is rather hit and miss!

Also if you get Otogi 2 the frist game is included if memory serves me (euro).

yeah, all i really want is SFAC, Outrun2, Rallisport2, and few others. i thought those 2d games would be the easiest to create a profile for, too, but i guess there are issues like stretching the image, etc.
anyway, i think the digital pad in the old xbox S pad is better than the new dpads. the new one is a bit softer when it comes to hitting the directions and mine sometimes has issues with hitting down. doesn't bother me though since i now prefer a stick over pads for arcade games, and usually most xbox games primarily use the analog sticks.

Im guessing the emulator in the 360 was quickly rushed and they may update the emulator software in the future.

If Microsoft put the time and effort into it they could make an emulator which is 97% compatible, but i doubt they will bother.

In a years time playing xbox games will be something of the past for a lot of people, so there will be little reason to use them on 360.

Damn it...everytime I try to watch a video from this site it always lags. It shows a Quicktime icon when I download it to my desktop, yet I can't play it in QT, I can only play it in WMP. Does anybody know how I can fix this?

good point Jollipop, alot of xbox-live titles get sequels for the 360, i gues they will never come on the emulator or not anytime soon

<I>Im guessing the emulator in the 360 was quickly rushed and they may update the emulator software in the future.</i>

I've heard the emulation started once final kits were complete, this was about Mid-Late August of 2005 so everything on day 1 was done in abut 3 months.

<I>If Microsoft put the time and effort into it they could make an emulator which is 97% compatible, but i doubt they will bother.</i>

I think they'll give it a year before re-evaluating the situation. I believe by the time of the 360's first anniversary easily 800 or so games could be working. If you factor in that a lot of prequels/sequels share engine designs it's not going to be a far cry to get say Rocky working since Rocky Legends already does

Well there are still bugs the reason why MS doesn't approve these games is because testers probably have to certify them..

The emulator is a work in progress and will be constantly updated. MS have stated that it's their goal to have all titles backwardly compatable in the future. Patience is all that's needed.

Oh man, I hate MS for not really supporting the VGA Cabel. There are so much games which don't run if you have this cabel. And the demos, of course, aren't running with it either.

What's funny is that a lot of "officially" supported games have the same problems.

Not really funny though.

Just because they state something doesn't mean it will happen.

I think it was just put out there to calm people down, I have never seen backward compatibility a huge feature, and Sony have been the only people to do it in the past.

In a year or two, nobody will care.

I don't care RIGHT NOW.

I find its very easy to get over. Just get a good 360 game.
