Crytek 720p next-gen tech demo
2006-01-22 10:13:26 by Manager
Crytek released this tech demo, showing how their upcoming engine handle different environments. It looks of course good as hell.
Update: Keep in mind that this video was shown during E3 (but not released as direct-feed) and that it all should look much better today.

2006-01-22 10:46:29 Crytek 720p next-gen tech demo
Just to keep things into perspective, Crytek is no longer working on the Far Cry series, so do not expect to see this engine in use for Far Cry Instincts Predator in March. Crytek has moved on to working on their next franchise with EA leaving the Far Cry franchise in the sole ownership of Ubisoft.
The upcoming Far Cry Instincts Predator (X360) is from the looks of things, appears to be an 'enhanced' version of the Far Cry Instincts engine used for X1.
I just thought that needed clearing up before everyone got excited that this engine was being used on the upcoming X360 version of Far Cry Instincts this spring.
Beyond that, this new engine from Crytek looks stunning and should definitely keep them in the game for one of next-gen's top licensed engines. Unreal Engine 3 looks completely amazing in internal and semi-enclosed areas, but once you get into wide-open spaces, the limitations of the engine make themselve very apparent. Crytek on the other hand is obviously once again shooting for an engine that really blows it out the water when the action takes place out of doors. This is really gorgeous stuff and I hope to see more of it in the near future.
EDIT - Just watched the video and WOW!!!! These photos do it absolutely no justice, you have to see this video to believe. Some areas are simply amazing. Everything that UE3 does for dark and brooding corridors, CryEngine 2 does for wide open, brightly lit vistas. It's just unbelievable. If they are using this engine, then their next game cannot come soon enough. Hopefully we'll see something by E3 with a multiplatform announcement for Q4.
The video seems to be a small part of a larger video, please someone get us the rest of this demo. I have got to see more of this.

The advanced shader technology looks crazy! Everything else looks good too but that sticks out to me.

This looks fuckin awesome! Besides I realised some bad mip-mapping and the house looks like it crashes before the car hits it, but I'm not so sure about that (and I watched this part like 10 times with 0.25% slomo...)

This engine would be godly on the 360 :D
Nice indeed man just another piece of evidence that screenshots can't do certain things proper justice.

Freakin amazing. The volumetric clouds get me the most. Too bad they'll probably rarely be used in any sort of FPS.

Guys I'd also like to point out that practically everything shown there with the exception of the realistic looking face will be in blue dragon for the 360. Everything shown including the interativity with the environment were all things sakaguchi promised would be in the game. He said players would be shocked at the amount of interactivity with the environment.
Also mentioned a new type of cloud technology and was talking about something that sounded similar to that dynamic day/night cycle thing. The way the guy was brushing up against those leaves and they were responding realisticly he promised such interactivity with the environment and much more.
Blue dragon is naturally a next gen (where shadows play a huge part in the game) so soft shadows is almost a must and he did mention something about them all being in real-time. Especially some new technique where no spell would look the same way twice they are all done in real time and there isn't set patterns for what spells will look like unlike how games have been doing it for years. If you had a move called fire 2 or something like that it'd look the same way every single time.
Same thing for lost odyssey in regards to the spells not sure about him going all out on environmental interactivity though, but no doubt he probably will.
I'll try to find some of the articles when he was talking about this stuff.

i saw this a few months ago but it it wasn't direct feed..good man blim
ok i have a question...hope it doesn't seem too dumb...somebody was saying that they thought the unreal 3.0 was better at indoor and this at outdoor..
wud it be impossible for a game to use 2 engines for different aspects?

I guess it would be nearly impossible as the devs would have to pay twice the licensing fees for one game, and they would have to integrate two engines, optimeze and tune ... that will never happen, though it would be possible (at least on a per level basis)

Correction rusty the 360 videocard goes beyond shader model 3.0 and has features that even directx10 aka WGF 2.0 wont have :)
http://www.beyond3d.com/articles/xenos/index.php?p... <--beyond shader model 3.0 and directx9 specifications
http://www.beyond3d.com/articles/xenos/index.php?p... <--MEMEXPORT
The 360 is fully capable of running this engine to its full capability, the ps3 gpu on the other hand isn't as its a 7800GTX 512. It doesn't go beyond shader model 3.0 or support directx 10 features or go beyond directx10 features such as the 360's gpu does.
To be honest the best way to put it is simply that this videocard in the 360 doesn't stick to any strict guildlines. It wasn't geared for directx9 or directx10 just like that it was geared towards itself so to speak. They set out to make the best possible console gpu one can currently have and in trying to accomplish that goal they ended up with a videocard that supports all dx9 features and goes beyond dx9 features and supports many dx10 features and then goes beyond directx10 features. A perfectly built console gpu designed for the future. Thats how many have described they say the 360 gpu doesn't simply meet any directx specifications it meets its own.

I would certainly expect both the 360 and PS3 to be capable of graphics as good as this. The video was cool but nothing too impressive.
