Footage of Alan Wake

2006-09-27 10:39:44 by Manager

During the Intel Developer Forum conference last night, Remedy was invited to show how Alan Wake looks today. It was played on a PC, but the Xbox 360 version shouldn't be much different. Do I have to say it looks awesome?

Actually the GPU in the Xbox 360 is still more advanced than the current high-end cards.

The hardware is more than powerful enough to run this game, it's just taking time to exploit it's power. Quite why you mention that the Gears of Wars developers are struggling is a mystery to me.
The Xbox 360 gpu is indeed more advanced than any single high-end card out there, but that's talking about a single card. My guess is the PC they were using probably is a quad-SLI setup with the videocard's possibly overclocked as well, and that definitely beat's anything out there. And don't forget the limited amount of ram in the 360. My guess is that in the Xbox 360 version the range of view will be limited and texture detail will be lowered a bit, that way making the game still look allot like what we see in this video.

josef: umm, the 360 gpu is equivilent of x1900 but also with the new tech ati plan on using in their next pc cards, the unified shizzo, which when used right, is uber powerful

This is exactly what Remedy is doing NOW! We are making both PC and 360 versions by ourselves and they are being developed parallelly. At the same time. By the same people.

And the 360 version will look good. Promise.

Anyway, thanks for the kind comments :) and happy gaming!

A 360 would never had handled this with such a framerate.
60 fpm would be realistic.

Cool!

I just watched the video for the 4th time and just realised they are using volumetric lighting! That is incredible technology to be running in realtime!

Oh! That's reassuring to know! This is one of my most anticipated games.

Oh and Sam Lake is Max Payne. I'll never embrace that block of wood they got for 2. :)

Future Crew owns/owned.

People who aren't familiar with their work, check out a little bit of history:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Future_Crew

These guys really pushed the boundries of what was possible in real time--far before people were even interested in real time 3D. If you haven't seen any of their work, it's worth checking out a few of their demos (give second reality a peep--it's a classic). The demo scene is not what it used to be--but there's still a scene there..definitly worth checking out.

Not everyday I get a chance to pimp my love for Future Crew!

Oh, and Remedy rocks too! Max Payne 1/2 are two of my favorite 3rd person shooters--I want part 3--but only if you guys make it :(

Looks great.
The biggest problem getting this running smoothly on the 360 won't be the CPU but the GPU. The 360 gpu is already pretty far behind current PC gpus (look up the fillrate)

A lot of decent developers are struggling with. (See: MotoGP, Oblivion, Quake IV, Gears of War, Battle for Middle Earth II, etc )
But hopefully we'll see it on a 360 at X06.
The 360 has a 16 gigapixels fill rate when the Edram is used correctly (tiling), so aslong as the dev (hint hint) uses it correctly it can easily compete with a PC GPU.

A PC GPU is only as good as the bus that is feeding it, and most PC's don't have sufficient bandwidth to keep up with the rendering bandwidth/performance of most GPU's.

As Mika Reini said that they are developng the 360 seperately and that it will look as good as they can make it.

The 360 may struggle with streaming though, considering the HD isn't standard and all *damn it MS*

I would be ineterestee to know what resolution settings the game was running at there.

Like Optimus said though this CPU pretty much blows the X360's CPU out of the water, even with processes running in the back ground (even in vista) i still expect the PC CPU to out perform the X360's CPU. (360 may have the upper hand with physics calculations though)

Hi Mika Reini, if you have time can you let us know what will be the major differences between the PC version and the 360's? The PC version looks stunning by the way I just want to know if we can expect the same on 360 the version.

i haven't a notion what you's are talking about half the time...but this forum has thought me more about graphic design technology then 2 years in college...

Yikes, she looks like a cross between a neanderthal and an alien . . . yeesh.

Anyway, Alan Wake looks awesome - and the quad-core CPU was on display just so Intel could flex its muscles, the game wouldn't stress it at all - and as for Vista, I'm typing on it right now, and for gaming, it's surprisingly resource friendly. It's nothing like the jump from ME to XP was.

And please no more 360 vs PC debates - of course PCs are more powerful all around, for more reasons than I care to list. And that's as it should be, they cost anywhere from twice as much, to twenty times as much as a 360/PS3. But please, 360 lovers (of which I am one), don't come up with reasons to argue the point, 'cause the 360 is still an awesome piece of hardware!

..Actually, he said, it "will look good"--not, "it will look like what you see in this demo--and it will be easy!"

But I'm sure it will be close--my only point is that, that's one hell of a PC. Core 2 @ under 3ghz performs amazingly well (pretty much outperforming every CPU on the market)--we're talking about hitting 4GHz with the Core 2 architecture--and this is no Pentium 4/D--that extra 1000Mhz is a big jump in performance.

At 2.4Ghz the Core 2 Duo can go neck and neck with AMD's top of the line (and at around $300)--3.7Ghz is..astounding.

I know, and I never said it would look exactly the same did I? See what I did there.
The 360 will run the game well, but there will still be limitations due to RAM. That is a certainty. However, I have faith that Remedy will give us something close to what we saw.

nah, not really. Do you honestly think developers don't care about the world around them?

maybe if they didn't care about the world around them we would get games faster?

yeah!
