Gamersyde Diaries: Fable 2
2007-07-23 00:22:37 by Snoopers
During E3, we've had the chance to attend a Fable 2 presentation headed by Peter Molyneux. The demo was focused on combat, and then Peter took some time to tell us more about their new death system. So, here is a brand new GSD on Lionhead's next production. A side note about the video: we've had bad shooting conditions, and the image and sound are not as good as usual. Considering the size of a HD file, we've decided to stick with 640x360 for this time.

Part of me is really excited for this game while the other half is thinking total FLOP. I can't tell what to think...
I still don't understand how the boss fights will work if you can't die? Does the boss just back up and let you stand up after beating you 'til you have a new scar? Doesn't make sense for certain scenarios.

Ohhh, destrucable fences, cool. I like destructable environments. :)
Im just wondering if my Hero won't get scars in normal combat now? If he does, there's really no way to avoid those "badass" scars. :S
Man, i can't wait for this game. Oblivion killer! :D

I'm pumped for this game, loved the first fable as a sort of action/rpg, even though it wasn't what we were all expecting.

I like how he tries to make one button fighting sound like it's a good thing yet he struggles with it as he tries to demo it. I wish developers would stop oversimplifying games, it is of course a way to get non gamers intrested in games but it leaves experienced gamers with a sour aftertaste.

Not convinced by the one button combat, sounds like Fables but with added blocking/dodging and animations. The death idea siouns goo and more games should try different things with death I think. It looks like the game still has a long way to go though.

great show as always!
i`m also unsure if this "one button does it all" is the way to go... WHY is it bad to use more than one button? i really don`t quite get it. is the average gamer nowadays such a uncoordinated retard that he can`t use more than one button? i mean in a combat situation you won`t need the other 3 buttons to talk or use stuff.
this whole dumbing down of games has to stop! (like auto-aim and such crap)
games become "rides" where you get told when you have to press a button to see a predefined (scripted) cutscene. next stop: DVD MOVIE! >:(
but maybe the "market" wants it that way... i`m more the oldschool type ^_^
i`m not in the pokemon crowd hehe. far too old for that :0/
also the animations look still very rough. i hope they improve them before release.
the scar idea i rather like. this could be great if it really impacts on NPCs reaction towards you, changing your options later in the game. otherwise it would be pretty pointless imho.
btw: that pillow makes Pipomantis look somewhat funny ;oD

Weird I think the more buttons you use for combat the better the game gets!
I mean you get all different attacks with different buttons and button combinations and that's normally way better than this "one button rules all" scenario....

I wouldn't expect this to be the constant for boss battles though. I bet some bosses will instead go into a cut scene where they carry you off and throw you out or something. Or this could happen after being downed to many times. letting you get up unlimited times could cause you to get stuck in a battle the there is no escape from.

I also like the fact that by using the more advanced moves you gain more experience.

On the other hand, i like the "death" reinvention. I also feel it starts feeling a bit old. For example, was playing The Darkness and particularly there, the idea of dying didn't fit at all, it's very detaching from the immersive experience that they are so hard trying to achieve (with bad ass graphics, sound, etc). Look at it, this guy is narrating the story of when he died for the first time. Moreover when you are actually dead and in hell, how does dying happens...er...when you are already dead?
I think that it just a concept that is accepted de facto, and developers don't even try differently, it's good hearing someone trying to reinvent this concept.

I really don't think it's that much of an innovation. Tell me if I'm wrong but I remember in some other interview Molyneux saying that once you've been pummelled to shit, you awake in a nearby Hotel/Inn. The more I think about it the more I doubt myself, but I'm sure it was something along those lines, rather than just getting back up again with full health. Sure, the character doesn't actually die, but really, what's so revolutionary? Frankly I think the modern system in a lot of FPS games where your health recharges itself far more revolutionary (and in my opinion, more fun).
As for the one button combat, I think it's a pretty good idea really. Rather than having buttons which change purpose when you're in a particular mode (which can get pretty confusing), it's turned combat into a rhythm game. Pretty good idea if you ask me, considering how popular rhythm games are these days.
Sadly it's not gonna have a combat system as good as Molyneux suggests, and yes, he will be slaughtered at review time for saying that the combat system is as good as Virtua Fighter and Soul Calibur's. Well... judging from the combat system shown in this demo.
